Burnin’ in Efijy:  Too hot for mere smouldering, this stunning vehicle – the General Motors Efijy – is a tribute to the 1953 Holden FJ.

It’s a great example of what General Motors is capable of doing. Even greater is the global attention that this vehicle has received and it highlights GM’s concept design capabilities. It was engineered and built by GM’s Holden operation in Australia.

Paying modern tribute to a vehicle more than 50 years its senior, the Efijy is an eye-seizing exercise in styling execution. It’s also a performance vehicle, making strategic use of many mechanical parts from General Motors Holden’s rear wheel drive global platform.  The Efijy’s body has brawn to match.  In such stylishly brutal housing, is the brutally stylish performance of a Corvette 644 horsepower (480 kW) V8 Engine displacing six litres.

Engineered to perform like a modern vehicle, it balances a futuristic feel with retro style.  The Efijy features an abundance of chrome to provide striking contrast to it’s Soprano Purple paintwork.  The Holden design team deliberately chose a modern/retro theme for this project with the result: an inferno of attention from automotive fans.

The Efijy has ignited a phenomenal response with enormous coverage on web sites, and the production of die-cast replicas on back order.  GM have restated that there are no mainstream production plans for this vehicle, resulting in the cessation of countless in-progress negotiations of soul-selling transactions.

Although it’s FJ heritage is recognizable, the Efijy is in a different scale: twice as wide, half as high, it has a low-slung, customer car look that immediately sets it apart from mass-produced pop-out cars.

The modern technology in the Holden Efijy includes push button electronic transmission, digital speedo, colour-coded tachometer, touch-screen controls, adjustable air suspension and satellite navigation.  There are no globes at all in the Efijy – all the lights are LEDs (Light-emitting Diodes), which last longer (up to ten times longer), are more efficient -  using less power, and emit more light than conventional globes

Once given the green light, the Efijy project took just 8 months to complete from scratch.  From the heat of the speed to produce it to the heat of it’s looks to the heat of interest it has created around the world, this is an unbelievably hot rod.

A brutish modern-day hot rod that revives and celebrates Australia’s most famous car, the FJ Holden, was first revealed at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney in October, 2005.

The Efijy is a revolutionary custom coupe with a sweeping, pillarless design, matched for boldness by a V8 Supercar power engine, Chevrolet Corvette underbody and up-to-the-minute automotive technology throughout.

Adding further to Efijy’s captivation package is its ‘Soprano Purple’ paintwork, which enhances the shapely body, reinterpreting the timeless design cues of the classic 1953 FJ Holden.   General Motors Holden have called it the ultimate “retro, mumbo and gizmo package.”

The Efijy is not intended for production, yet has been a powerful project of passion for a team of Holden Designers also responsible for the all-new 2006 Holden Commodore.

Forging the skills and resources of  almost 20 suppliers to highlight the latest in mechanical, electronic and material products and ideas, the Efijy has been an enduring dream for Chief Designer Richard Ferlazzo.

Automotive abundance throbs throughout the Efijy, from a 480 kW ( 644 horsepower), supercharged 6 litre V8 engine, to air-adjustable shock absorbers, to a touch control LCD screen and LED headlamps with fan-cooling.

Holden have said that the Efijy project was developed as a collaboration with key supply businesses which shared the work schedule and optimimised the quality of the end result for the show car.

GMH Chief Denny Mooney said “Efijy is all about fun, emotion and imagination. It shows what a bunch of clever and talented design people can do when they are let loose to create something really wild,”

“This year was a fantastic opportunity for us to create something which highlights our designers’ ability and versatility.”

Holden are confident that the Efijy will evoke memories for everyone old enough to remember the FJ, the Efijy’s inspiration or inspire those young enough to not know the Efijy’s inspirational heritage.

Efijy project leader and Holden Chief Designer Richard Ferlazzo, who penned the first Efijy design sketches in 1989, is an enduring custom car fan, and he’s said the car existed purely for automotive entertainment.

“EFIJY is also aimed at the legions of custom car and hot rod enthusiasts out there whose appetites aren’t generally met in the concept car arena.”

“We’re all car nuts together and the fact that EFIJY stands on our Sydney motorshow stand goes some way to legitimising this form of automotive design in the mainstream.”

Since it’s first showing, the Efijy has won acclaim and admiration at dozens of Motor Shows, and drawn a big fan following, particularly in North America where it’s design, styling, technology and innovation appeals to so many true car fanatics.
